Headwraps ‘n Earrings: Zuri Earthly Designs

Leimert Park is a cultural mecca, full of eccentric people from differing backgrounds, food vendors, drum players, and my favorite, jewelry makers.
About a month ago, I met the lovely, Rayna Brooks of Zuri Earthly Designs, a curator of beautiful jewelry, body butters, and smell goods.
Check what she says about Zuri:
Zuri Earthly Designs is my baby! While looking for a name, I wanted it to be an Afrikan name; one that would reflect my heritage and my vision. I found ZURI, which means Beautifull in Swahili, and I fell in love! EARTHLY came from the fact that I use materials that are from the Earth; Semi Precious stones, Gold, Copper, shells, cotton, etc. The Most High has given us beautiful gifts and I want to display them in the most beautiful way possible. I create Rings, Earrings, Necklaces, Nose Rings, Bracelets, Bags and Hair Jewelry. My creations vary in style; From the very conservative to the most Eclectic. I try to create something for everyone. I am looking to broaden my creativity so stay tuned.
Later, when I asked her about her inspiration, she said:
My inspiration comes from [so] many different things. It may come from the shape of a leaf, a lamp shade, the way my noodles look on my plate. I love shapes and clean lines at the same time I love asymmetry. Sometimes when I’m driving or out and about, an idea will come to me and I will grab [anything] and draw it out. I have ripped off pieces of paper, napkins, old receipts with my ideas drawn on them. A lot of love energy goes into making [all] of my creations. I [truly] enjoy it!
She indeed is a true artist. You can find Rayna and Zuri Earthly Designs on www.zuriearthlydesigns.etsy.com
Pre NY Curly Hair Mixer – I’m at JFK
Posted on 18 May 2012 | No responses
It was a long flight and my drooling self slept the whole way from California to NY. Actually, I was sad when the plane landed since I couldn’t finish my sleep fest.
But I’M HERE. All excitement in the air is coming from me. I always forget that all people aren’t balls of sunshine and smiling so I got some weird looks when I said “thank you” to the flight crew and smiled at the sky cap.
Whatev. They just mad they ain’t coming to my party! Lol!
Tonight, to celebrate the brands who supported eight nationally located Grand Marshals, we are holding the #NOTHINGBUTBEAUTIFUL Twitter party for Beautiful Textures @lovinmytextures and Sof’nfree @nothingbuthair. Our last Twitter party was a blast so please jump on. You can get more deets and RSVP here.

I’m feeling so alive and ready to run, yet, oh so sleepy. I haven’t bothered to jump on the train to my destination. Just sitting here, letting my phone charge and watching these gangsta airport birds fly up to people like “WHAT?!” Lol, I ain’t ever seen any stuff like that. Only in NY.
Anyway folks, see you tonight at the #nothingbutbeautiful Twitter party at 9p Est and all you NY people looking to wrap a day full of events and have a good time, I’ll see you tomorrow night at the New York Curly Hair Mixer. Last minute tix just opened at http://nhpnewyork.eventbrite.com.
See ya when I see ya! Peeeeace!
Pinned Up – Copious Fashion Boards on E-commerce Crack
Posted on 17 May 2012 | No responses
A few weeks back, Venture Beat, an online mag chronicling the goings on in the tech world featured an article listing Pinterest “clones”. Of course, to me Pinterest is just an image only based Tumblr for the anal retentive. And the interface is clean and girly.
However, since Pinterest’s success, we’ve seen a buttload of sites using similar layouts and concepts to help people share their favorite things and drive traffic and sales. Then comes Copious.
Copious is a Pinterest-like social bookmarketing site designed to allow for e-commerce of fashion related products. The challenge here is for shopalics that are also Pinterest-holics. My name is Jasmine and I am a shopaholic so I’m trying NOT to look at Copious often.
They got me at the Denim, Cutout, Glitter and Neon boards. Everyone I follow has SO much stuff I want to buy. Lawdhamercy! If you’re looking for inspiration or simply looking to find cool fits, accessories, and cosmetics for cool prices, give Copious a try.
Happy social shopping!

Man, in TWO days I will be in NY, my second home, for the Natural Hair Parade Curly Hair Mixer and after affair for Amazing Botanicals Pop Up Salon Grand Opening (invitation for daytime pre-event pictured and guess who designed it and the Grand Opening logo??) and our Grand Marshal 5/19 sponsors Sofn’free and Beautiful Textures.
I really am geeked that I
‘ll be able to meet with my east coast natural divas and gents. They are going to be DEEP. Brooklyn represents and I can’t wait to rub shoulders and chop it up with them. EXCITED!
The food will be delish as well as it’s provided by our venue host Beso at 370 Lewis Ave. This Latin inspired cuisine will delight the taste buds of all in attendance. Oh, and did I mention the DRANKS? We’ll have a special NHP drink for the evening with pineapple in it. I’m obviously not a bartender. All I know it has pineapple, it’ll be yellow to match our branding and that I’m gonna have two glasses lol.
We have a DJ in the house, a comedian, a natural hair and mommy blogger, a relationship coach and natural diva, a coco Latina blogger and a fly barber and natural hairstylist. I’ll be there too *smiles*. (Shhhh, I’ve just opened up some last minute tickets for only $5 here.)
The only sad thing is that my sweet Daily won’t be able to make it after all but she’ll be there soon for another event and if it depends on me, I’ll be trying to take her with me on a few more of my stops. She’s the bomb.comness.
So we will eat, drink and be merry as we celebrate a wonderful day of natural beauty and the people who make up our community!
See you soon!

Makeover Monday: No Butts Necessary
Posted on 14 May 2012 | No responses
Last week on Things Women Do For Beauty we saw a burnt Caucasian lady addicted to tanning. In this weeks edition, we have a woman who got butt injections at what’s called a plumping party where I suppose you get goop pushed up your butt cheeks to achieve the infamous Atlanta booty. This woman, is now a multiple amputee, meaning, she has no legs or arms as a result of infections she got after getting this foolishness.
However, we’re inspired by her positive spirit and according to BlackMediaScoop.com, she plans to become a motivational speaker. It’s my hope she not only talks about enduring such a horrible loss, but also how being compelled to undergo drastic procedures to enhance beauty can prove futile.
I’m not particularly a fan of any medical beauty enhancements. I’m afraid, first of all and two, according to statistics, those who do have them (don’t quote me, I’m referring to a study some years back that sited those getting implants were at high risk for suicide) suffer from other emotional disorders. I’m not saying you’re crazy if you do choose to have procedures done, but definitely, as a precaution, work on whatever is leading you to do this as a surface “I just want a big booty” may not be the issue.

I’d like to think that like creation is has a plethora of beauty and humans are yet another amazing variety. No booty, big booty, little boobs, big boobs, flat stomach, big stomach, it’s beautiful. I’m not simply saying that. I look at it this way, does that joint WORK? Then it’s beautiful. If your butt isn’t cancerous and rotting off of your body, LEAVE THAT MESS AS IT IS.
Attracting booty hungry men should not be a priority and while most will say it’s about them or looking better in their clothes, please, you’re trying to attract someone. Look your best as you are and primping will do wonders to enhance. But please don’t go in some back room in the club to get your booty hiked up by some random person. Sidebar: And we thought genital mutilation or breast ironing was vile and abusive. Yet, here in America, we’re signing up for another type of mutilation? Hmm, okay.
I can’t say, I don’t judge, because it’s natural that I do. I’ll try not to give side eyes if I’ve heard you were considering some type of bathroom medical procedure. However, as a forewarning, DO NOT DO IT!
Roots Rock ReBelle Kinky Chick

Look what I won in a contest from crochet and wearable art designer, Roots Rock ReBelle. It’s called a Kinky Chick and though ReBelle plans to discontinue them (awwwww), I got mine (yaaaay).Hurry, she’s still accepting orders!
The contest, conducted a few weeks back, was all about how fly you are as a ki
nky chick. My entry was:
I’m a fly kinky chick because I’m okay in my element. I do what makes me happy without reservation. I ooze confidence and I’m just the bomb.
Ladies, we have a habit of downplaying our good attributes in an effort to remain humble and while humility is a beautiful trait, it’s wonderful to know that you are beautifully made, intrinsically unique and a blessing to all those around you. Right? RIGHT! You better believe it!
What I really like about ReBelle’s Kinky Chick is that she went and customized it to fit me. I did a side by side and was like, YUP, that’s me. lol
Support ReBelle and her fabulous Kinky Chicks and other merchandise by visiting her online today.
